Food Basket Traveling QuiltThe Food Basket Traveling Quilt is presented as a symbol of God’s love and caring for hungry people around the world. It will be displayed at various Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) relief sales being held throughout the United States and Canada in 2009-2010. The Food Basket quilt is a symbolic auction item, serving to inspire bidders to contribute toward Food For All, a campaign to reduce immediate hunger in the world. It will actually be sold during the 2009-2010 relief sale season. Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has a long history of developing programs to; assist in emergency food distributions, help communities provide sustainable agricultural projects and find long-term solutions to alleviate hunger. The quilt, pictured above was made by Marlys Wiens from waxed dyed Java print in brilliant colors and patterns unique to Congo, Africa. Food programs that currently benefit from Food For All are: “Coming Home:Sudan” a program that is helping returning refugees and assisting farmers in food production through Sudanese church organizations. In Zimbabwe MCC is assisting the Brethren in Christ Church, distributing 72 tons of wheat and soybeans to 23 high schools in the Matobo District where many of Zimbabwe’s 33,000 Brethren in Christ members live. In Burma MCC is providing food assistance along with medical treatment and emergency supplies. I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.
